What Are Prostate Seed Implants For Cancer Treatment?2013-12-24 17:47

Prostate seed implants are tiny radioactive seeds which are implanted directly into the cancerous tissue of the prostate gland in patients suffering from prostate cancer. This procedure is known as Brachytherapy or prostate seed implantation and is one of the most preferred methods for the effective treatment of prostate cancer. The logic behind the treatment is simple as the radioactive seeds give out radioactive rays which destroy the cancer cell from inside the organ. However, like all therapies, prostate seed implanting has its advantages and risks and the patient should be aware of these before deciding to opt for the procedure.

First of all a combination of antibiotics and anesthesia are administered to the patient. The patient lies on his back and the knees are placed in stirrups. Ultrasound is used for guidance in order to permanently implant the 50 or 80 radioactive palladium or iodine implants that are inserted into the tissue with the help of needles. The patient may have to urinate through a strainer to catch any seeds that may be passed along with the urine.

Advantages of Brachytherapy

This procedure is minimally invasive and requires very little time to complete. External beam radiation therapy requires a five days a week for a period of six to nine weeks. On the other hand, prostate seed implants require only outpatient treatment and have a very quick recovery time.

Risks involved with Brachytherapy

There may be irritation in the urinary tract, inflammation, pain, frequent urination, burning, painful urination, urgency to urinate and waking up many times in the night to urinate. There also may be irritation in the rectum, pain, burning, urgency and frequency of bowel movements. People who have high grade cancer are not good candidates for this procedure. At the same time, the radioactivity from the prostate seed implants can affect children or the elderly. There also can be erectile dysfunction and possible pubic hair loss. Even fathering a child may become difficult.

About Author

How cervical cancer creates a life-threatening impact? (Finn Anderson)2013-12-23 08:03

According to the medical experts, they reveal that cervical cancer progresses at a gradual cancer & this is said to create a dreaded impact over the lining of the entrance of the uterine region which is represented as cervix. Cancer has been described as a disorder which leads for the uncontrolled development as well as the proliferation of the cells. This is said to create an adverse impact over the lining of the cervix & this is located in the lower part of the uterine region & this condition can be represented as cervical cancer.

This lining of the cervix which is located in the inner region is comprised with dual types of cells which are termed as squamous & columnar cells. The part in the cervix region where such transition of one cell to another cell takes place is referred to as squamo-columnar junction. Such form of regions is considered to be more susceptible for the development of cancerous cells. The medical experts explain that cancerous cells of the cervix develop in a gradual way & thus create an adverse impact with the succession of time.

Certain abrupt & abnormal alterations which the cells of the cervix generate help for the transformation into pre- cancerous stage & this can be represented as Cervical Intraepithelia Neoplasia (CIN). According to the ratios of severity, such type of alterations is categorized as low grade CIN & high grade CIN. The cancer gradually spreads to the other regions of the human body & surrounding tissues, thereby forms a localized cancer.

The health professionals explain that cervical cancer is led due to Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). It happens due to excessive smoking, unprotected sessions of copulation, and excess consumption of birth control medications or suffering from the infectious reactions of HIV. Moreover, aging factors play an efficient role for the occurrence of such cancers. Females who are constant smokers possess double chances of the development of the risks of cervical cancer as compared with the females who do not smoke. Physicians must examine the medical history of such patients so as to procure with efficient measures of treatment.

Radiation & chemotherapy form to effective treatment methods for overcoming such fatal conditions. This could be associated with certain side-effects like loss of hair, diarrhea, etc. Also, the utilization of medicinal products which include cisplatin & fluorouracil prove to be beneficial for combating against such cancers & they can be either injected or can be consumed orally.

What Is Involved In Pancreatic Cancer Treatment?2013-12-20 22:02

Pancreatic cancer is a lethal disease that does not usually get detected until it has reached advanced stages which makes pancreatic cancer treatment quite complicated. The pancreas is a spongy, tubular organ around 6 inches in length. It is located in the back of the abdomen behind the stomach. The pancreas secretes enzymes that help digestion and hormones that help the regulation of the metabolism of carbohydrates. Pancreatic cancer is essentially a malignant tumor in the pancreas. The prognosis in the case of pancreatic cancer is usually poor and the results of treatment are also such. Most patients survive for about 3-6 months after diagnosis. Very few patients survive for 5 years after commencing treatment and complete remission is even rarer.

Symptoms of pancreatic cancer

If you notice any of these symptoms then you should immediately see an oncologist who will diagnose the disease and suggest pancreatic cancer treatment. Loss of appetite and unintended weight loss among which unintentional weight loss is a common symptom of pancreatic cancer. Most cancers cause weight loss because the cancerous cells do not allow the healthy cells to get the sufficient nutrients and this is especially true in pancreatic cancer.

As the cancer spreads and grows one develops a pain in upper abdomen and sometimes it spreads to the back. The pain worsens while eating or lying down. A patient may also experience nausea, and weakness. In some cases the patient develops jaundice which is caused by the buildup of billirubin. The symptoms of pancreatic cancer are quite vague which makes timely pancreatic cancer treatment quite difficult.

Treatments of pancreatic cancer

Radiation therapy and chemotherapy can be used to kill the cancerous cells. Sometimes surgical removal of the pancreas is also performed. Sometimes along with the pancreas a portion of the stomach, duodenum, and nearby tissues are also removed during the surgery. A stent is placed in the bile duct to drain the bile into the small intestine.

Once detected pancreatic cancer is treated with the help of chemo and radiation therapy, surgery and stent placement. All these procedures are highly advanced and the surgery for removing part or whole of the pancreas is pretty complicated. This is the reason that the doctors treating this ailment have to be knowledgeable and experienced. At the same time, the infrastructure in the pancreatic cancer centers needs to be highly advanced because the diagnosis and treatment requires advanced technology.

The Use of Radium for Cancer Treatment2013-12-20 22:02

Cancer is essentially the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body. These mutant cells divide very fast and their rate of growth far exceeds the growth of normal cells. Over a period of time the cancer cells dominate the normal tissue of the body and make biological processes impossible to complete. Cancer can occur anywhere in the body and in any organ. Radiation therapy is still the most popular cancer treatment option. In this therapy high energy radioactive waves are used to kill the cancerous cells. The radiation damages the genetic material of the cancer cells which makes it impossible for the cells to continue dividing.

Radium was one of the first radioactive elements to be discovered and hence it was widely used for targeted radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Science has evolved over time and although radium is still used, many other methods and metals are also included in the process of cancer treatment. Radium has been proven as a satisfactory medium for radiation therapy. Radiation therapy involving radium involves an invasive procedure during which small gold tubes containing radium are inserted into the cancerous tissue. This causes the radiation from the radium to locally kill off the cancerous cells.

However, radium therapy is no longer the preferred option for cancer treatment and the most commonly used materials for radiation therapy nowadays are indium or cesium. Although the materials have changed, the general procedure for treatment is still the same. Even with these materials small devices containing the radioactive material are implanted around the affected tissue. The radiation emanating from these materials kills off the cancerous tissue slowly but surely. Sometimes cancer treatment may involve both radiation therapy as well as surgical removal of the affected organ or body part. This is usually the case with advanced stages of cancer.

An oncologist has to continually educate him or herself and keep abreast of the latest advancements in treatment for cancer. He or she should be adept at operating sophisticated equipment required during the process of radiation therapy and should also be an accomplished surgeon because many times surgery is required in the treatment of cancer along with chemo therapy and radiation therapy. The surgical procedures are used in order to surgically remove the affected organ or body part and may be quite complex. Above all, a cancer doctor should be compassionate. one who is conditioned to the anguish and pain felt by their cancer patients. He or she should be able to provide comfort and support and also prepare the patient mentally as well as physically for the treatment procedures.
